New (SSM-)Resource Groups vs Classic Resource Groups, and basic inventory

0

Hello,

After this thread (https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=296462) and this one (https://forums.aws.amazon.com/message.jspa?messageID=820494#820494), I have two questions :

  • is there not a regression between the Classic Resource Groups (close to Tag Editor) and the new Resource Groups, in SSM ? Is it indeed not possible to search for resources outside the region in this new SSM-Resource Groups, or I am mistaken somewhere ? As well as for the search menu in SSM (same section as Resource Groups), tags are mandatory for the search ; but if I want to find all resources (in fact, practically, all instances or all Load Balancers) ?

  • is there any mean to find all resources, wherever they are in the account (regions), whatsoever tags they have, whatever the state of the instances is... I mean : is there a way to do a basic inventory of all resources of the account (or even of the Organization) ? The inventory in SSM is region-limited and needs the instances to be running...

Tag Editor doesn't support eu-north-1 region nor new ELB (NLB or ALB)... :(

Thank you !

Hello acaitr,

AWS Resource Groups and Classic Resource Groups are two separate products - see https://docs.aws.amazon.com/ARG/latest/userguide/welcome.html#resource-groups-differences for a full list of differences. While AWS Resource Groups currently does not support cross-region groups, it for example has a public API and supports much more resource types than Classic resource groups.

Both Classic and AWS Resource Groups require at least one tag key set to search, they do not support the use case you are describing. I will take note of your request and we will consider it for future improvements of AWS Resource Groups.

Depending on your use case, AWS Config or AWS Systems Manager Inventory are able to accommodate what you are describing, but they both do not support all resource types.

Yes, Tag Editor does not yet support the stockholm region or new ELB variants. We do have those improvements in our near term roadmap, tough. I will update here as soon as it is launched.

Best,
Florian

Hello Florian,
THank you very much for this complete answer. I will do as possible with Config and SSM (that is indeed the solution I am studying, even it uses two services and is not exactly what I'm looking for), and we will wait for the next evolutions.

Thanks ! ;)

Last week, the new version of Tag Editor has been launched, which now also supports the Stockholm region.
