Best way to access S3 files as an SMB mount on Windows without on-prem options

0

I want to store my files on Amazon S3 and access them as an SMB mount on my Windows laptop. I've been looking into AWS Storage Gateway's File Gateway, as it seems to provide a way to store and retrieve Amazon S3 objects through file-based interfaces, such as NFS and SMB.

However, upon going through the setup instructions, it appears that I need to set up a Host platform, which seems to suggest that I need an EC2 instance to host the gateway if I'm not using any of the on-prem options (VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, Linux KVM, or hardware appliance). (Source: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/filegateway/latest/files3/create-gateway-file.html#set-up-gateway-s3-file)

My question is: is there a better or more cost-effective way to store files on S3 and access them as an SMB mount on my Windows laptop without setting up an EC2 instance or using on-prem options?

I don't have an on-premises datacenter environment, and I want the solution to be remote and securely accessible via ZScaler.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You're correct in your assessment of Storage Gateway.

As an alternative, have you looked at WorkDocs? I'm not sure what other requirements you have but it might do what you need.

In the future, you might look at Mountpoint for Amazon S3 - it's not ready (yet) as it only supports read operations; but for your use case it looks like it is more appropriate.
