Getting charged for stopped instance and can't see EBS Volume under my EC2 dashboard

0

I am currently being charged for an EC2 instance that was stopped months ago. I realized my mistake of not terminating the instance itself so now I am getting charged for the EBS Volume (verified by Cost Explorer). I terminated the instance today and now I am trying to delete the EBS volume and not seeing anything under the EC2 dashboard in the region I am being charged for. Enter image description here

Not sure why the EBS volume isn't showing up under my console in the region and was wondering I could get assistance with how to proceed so that I don't get billed anymore. I also made sure to check for any EIPs and snapshots created and there's nothing listed under there as well.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Amanda, sorry for any confusion experienced! This doc may help you: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/awsaccountbilling/latest/aboutv2/checklistforunwantedcharges.html. However, if you'd like, you can open a case via our Billing team here: go.aws/support-center. They have all the tools needed to assist you.

  • I opened a case with the Account and Billing team already and was told to ask for assistance on re:Post :') Should I open a case with Technical instead?

Went through the documentation linked and still the same results where nothing is showing up under my EC2 dashboard.

I'm wondering if I terminate an EC2 instance, will the EBS volume also automatically be deleted as well?

Sorry you're still seeing these charges, Amanda.

The EBS volume should be removed automatically. You can find more on that here: https://repost.aws/knowledge-center/recovery-terminated-instance.

As you're not seeing the charges in your console, make sure you expand the Elastic Block Store part of the menu, the one you're looking for should be visible if you click 'Volumes'. You can also use the commands listed here to see if the volume is gone: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/ebs-describing-volumes.html.

Once you've finished the above steps, respond on your Billing case to continue working with our team on next steps.

  • Hey Randi, thanks for getting back to me. If the EBS volume is removed automatically, then I believe I won't be charged anymore.

The screenshot I attached above was showing the Volume under the Elastic Block Store section. It's blank now and I also used a command from the link you attached to confirm nothing was there. Thank you so much for your help!

I terminated the instance today and now I am trying to delete the EBS volume and not seeing anything under the EC2 dashboard in the region I am being charged for.

Most likely this is because when you terminated the instance, the attached volumes were deleted as well. Now they're all gone that's why you can't see them (note that it's normal for volumes to disappear right away from the AWS Console, whereas the instance tends to hang around in a "Terminated" state for anything up to an hour before disappearing). The amount you're seeing in the billing dashboard is the charge accrued from the start of the current billing period until the moment the instance (and thus the volumes) were terminated.

Whether the volume is deleted when the instance to which it is attached is terminated depends on the Delete on Termination attribute https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/ebs-volumes.html#persistence-benefit
