How are DDoS related charges handled?

AWS charges for the services used. Amazon Shield Advanced provides cost offsetting for DDoS based charges which can help mitigate the costs associated in your scenario. Another approach will be ensuring that you've configured your API Gateway caching to accommodate potential attack behavior using Amazon Cloudfront and AWS WAF.
