In addition to the resource assignment that selects all S3 buckets, add one that specifically selects each bucket using the following steps. That way when the select all S3 buckets resource assignment is working, it will include any future buckets.
- In the AWS Console, open the backup plan
- Select assign resources
- Provide a name for the resource assignment
- Select include specific resource types
- Under select specific resource types, select S3
- For bucket name, uncheck all buckets and individually select each bucket
- Select assign resources
Alternatively add a resource assignment using tags to selects all the buckets.
Update 7 March 2022
It appears like select all S3 buckets in a resource assignment is now working.

I believe I did this before but cant confirm if I individually selected or did all. I am deleting the s3 resource assignment again and will make sure to individually select the buckets. Will let you know how it goes!
Individually selecting buckets seems to do the trick

Using tags does work with S3 resources, but without tags it doesn't seem to run.
