To be able to verify an email Identity on SES (in your case account@newec2.domain.edu), the email address account@newec2.domain.edu needs to have an active mailbox where it is able to receive emails from any email service provider (e.g gmail, yahoo, outlook, etc). Please note that this is outside of SES, if you have an application on the ec2 instance which is able receive and process incoming mail you need to review the application documentation, test and confirm that it can receive mail first before attempting to verify the email identity.
When you initiate the process to verify the email identity, SES will send an email to the inbox of the email address you wish to verify ( account@newec2.domain.edu). When you receive this email you need to click on the link in the email to verify it.
