AWS Expresslink for commercial product development

1

We are working on a switch and want to be able to control it via AWS IoT. We are researching the best way to connect it to AWS services.

Since we are not experts in AWS IoT, we are considering using an AWS Expresslink module for development, specifically the one offered by Espressif. This is a product for which we anticipate selling a large number of units to our customers, leading to the following question: Is it feasible to use an Expresslink module in a commercial product (in this case, a switch) with the potential for a high volume of sales, or should we develop it from scratch for this type of product?

Absolutely! This is one of the main features of AWS IoT ExpressLink that our partners such as Espressif provide. I would suggest reaching out directly to Espressif to confirm their terms and conditions for use.

This blog post has links to AWS partners that use ExpressLink in creating designs for their commercial customers (ref: Cardinal Peak). Another example of customer (from the blog post) is Ēdn, who have a commercial indoor smart garden device that uses ExpressLink also.

  • Thank you for your quick response. Then, we are going to use an AWS Expresslink module.

Now, we will investigate about which are the main services that we need to implement (Device Defender, Device Management, IoT Events...). Are there any minimum essential services that you can recommend to us?

  • While IoT workloads have a lot of commonalities such as onboarding devices, pub/sub patterns, security, and such, depending upon your organization and product needs, the actual implementations may vary. I would suggest reaching out to your AWS account manager and Solutions Architect who can help guide to the right resources. If you don't know the contacts, this link is a good starting point.
