AWS IoT for LoRaWAN Frame Counters

0

Hi,

Does AWS IoT for LoRaWAN provide frame counter to keep track of the uplink and downlink messages? Similar to TTN: https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/docs/lorawan/security.html#frame-countersf

Thanks!

yes, it does. And, Frame counter is well defined and standardized by LoRaWAN specification. AWS IoT for LoRaWAN follows the technical specification published by LoRaWAN alliance.

A better answer is yes but ... AWS Wireless does seem to implement the LoRa counters over the air, however as I noted in https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?threadID=334401&tstart=25 AWS does not pass the FCNT counter in the received Lora message meta-data (unlike all other LoRa service providers such as TTN, Loriot etc). Therefore you can't detect devices repeatedly rejoining (from counter resets) say due to power problems or poor communication (gaps in sequence number of received messages). Only a small missing feature but a big issue if you have a large fleet of devices to monitor.

You are right that the FCnt is not included in the metadata. We are investigating whether or not to add FCnt into metadata now. We will get back to you soon.
