Private Zone Dynamic Reverse DNS.

Does Route 53 allow the setup of a Dynamically Registered Private Zone for Reverse DNS? I'm not finding any documentation on this in my searching.

If you mean the automatic creation of a <vpc_cidr>.in-addr.arpa. private hosted zone, then no - you have to enter resource records yourself, either manually or via integration with other services.

You could automate a similar capability through the use of Amazon EventBridge, by triggering resource record updates based on EC2 events related to the running and termination of instances, however you would have to decide how you wanted to code the PTR records (perhaps using a Lambda function to derive a DNS name from the Private IP address of the instance).

There is an old blog post that talks about dynamic DNS, which might help provide some ideas around the Lambda function:

  • I have used the dynamic DNS solution from the blog with good success in the past.
